2007 Monte Rosso
Sonoma Valley Zinfandel

Martini on the Rocks.

One of the grandest vineyards of California, a longtime source of Sonoma’s most sought after grapes, and a living, thriving time portal into California’s agricultural past, we are honored and excited to have produced since 1995 a Zinfandel from the great Monte Rosso Vineyard.

Located on the eastern ridge of Sonoma Valley near Mt. Pisgah on the Mayacmas Range, this westward-facing site looks out over the entire Sonoma Valley from Carneros to Russian River. Steep, volcanic,  rocky and hosting vines long ago planted in the 1800’s at an elevation of about 1500 ft., the combination of factors here is unmatched by any American vineyard. Monte Rosso was originally planted by the Goldstein family in the 1880’s. Today a non-operational old stone building marks the spot of their winemaking efforts.

Shortly after Prohibition, Louis M. Martini, looking to establish winemaking operations in Napa, purchased a winery there. However, his vineyard lay just on the Sonoma side of Mt. Veeder. He named  it Monte Rosso for its reddish mountain soil and it became the foundation of the Martini winery’s greatest and long-lived red wines. Situated just above the fog line and several degrees cooler than the valley floor, Monte Rosso vines enjoy extended daylight, bright sunshine and cool nights. The wines are characterized by zesty fruit, minerally, and peppery flavors and mind-blowing blackberry jam flavors. The 2007 is simply a great wine in a great vintage from a great site. Like the Aldo’s this is another classic that will be on every Zin-hound’s must-have list. Just 594 cases made for the whole world to enjoy.
