2007 Gaudi Somerston Vineyard
Napa Valley Barbera

Warning: Potentially Addictive.

Wine and food. Food and wine. For many cultures, especially Italians, wine is all about food – something that can only be appreciated in the context of a meal. Food is what wine is all about. I’ve had many nice moments with a simple glass of good Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, or Port but I can certainly appreciate that wine IS better when you have something to eat with it.

Then there’s this new ’07 Biale Barbera. What a wine! - and please pass the mushroom pizza.

One of only two Napa Barberas we know of, this one is grown in two Napa vineyards: from the classic old Calistoga vineyard of Marie Torrigino, whose father, Gaudi Carli, planted it in 1920 and from an exciting newer vineyard on an ideal site that we helped plant up at the old Priest Ranch, now known as Somerston.

Racy red and black fruits such as cherry, cherry jam, plum, pomegranate, and nectarine are supported by very elegant tannins, a round and rich mid palate, and bright acidity. Sip after bite after sip after bite is an addictive experience as every taste becomes new again. Versatile as a Swiss Army knife. Meats, pastas, and tomato-based dishes are wonderful with this Barbera, but if you really want to get into it, go for a mushroom night: pizza, soup, stuffed quail, pasta, grilled Portobellos – you get the idea. Just 247 cases made.
